CD REVIEWS

FAVOURITE SIN, Ep by Cage The Gods
(7Hz Productions Ltd)

It's always great to discover bands that play real rock & roll music. Case in point, Cage The Gods from the UK. The amazing new rock band that fuses together rock ‘n’ roll culture from the four corners of the UK in a thunderously blues-inspired fashio

n. The band's four song Ep, 'Favourite Sin' is a sign of bigger and better things to come. The tip of the iceberg, if you will. The band is made up of, Peter Comerford on vocals, Jam on guitar, Mitch Witham on bass and Colin Jones on drums. All four tracks, the title track, "From The Start", "Wake Up" and the acoustic, "Sacrifice" are guaranteed winners. The band's sound is drenched in vintage Rock ala Faces, Stones, Free and Led Zeppelin. Make no mistake though, these lads serve up their own flavor to the table. Cage The Gods have quite simply exploded onto the scene. Having recently supported the Radio One play listed Heavens Basement and Classic Rock best new band winners Tracer, Cage The Gods are set to play many more dates to follow. The question I have is,  will they be able to convince the average listener to commit to an entire album or will contrived singles continue to win out? In the end, if the life and death of true rock music is determined by a such a clearly independent and driven sound as "Cage The Gods", I cannot imagine a better, deeper, and more assertive offering at a revival. If you want nostalgic pangs of the Classic rock era but with a fresh, urgent feel done with attitude and passion, do not miss out on Cage The Gods. I would definitely recommend ' Favourite Sin' to anyone who knows and loves good rock music! - Highly Recommended

THE DEAD DAISES by The Dead Daisies
(Spitfire Music)

Finally, a band enters the music scene with nothing to lose and they have won, musically. On their self-titled debut, The Dead Daisies have produced an album worthy of industry award recognition. From the opening riff of "It's Gonna Take Time" to the groove laden rocker like "Lock N Load (feat. Slash)" and the foot stomping "Washington", The Dead Daisies have found a sound that is both unique and modern. They have harnessed a multitude of styles and talents and blended them into something original. Twelve songs total. I honestly cannot pick a favorite on this album because they all have their place and are all winners! The Dead Daisies is vocalist Jon Stevens (Noiseworks, INXS), guitarist David Lowy (Mink, The Angels), bassist John Fields, Vanessa Amorosi on vocals, Kevin Savigar on keyboards, Dorian Crozier on drums and Issac Carpenter on drums on "Yesterday" and "Tomorrow". Together they've recorded a very impressive debut outing. The  album gets better and better the more you listen to it. Don't get me wrong, it was great on the first spin. But the more you listen, the more depth you realize is there. The Dead Daisies's self-titled debut has more layers and intricacies to explore than most bands these days. Perhaps it is a testament to their pure professionalism that excels this album past the clutter of everyday music. Jon Stevens is a rock solid rock n' roll frontman. Kudos as well to the band that are simply top notch and amazing! What we have here are a band of brothers pumping out powerful rock songs served up with that devious sense of mischief which has always lived at the heart of rock and roll. The best praise you can give a band like this is by asking, simply, "When are you going to make another record?" - Highly Recommended

LAST OF A DYING BREED (EP) by Biters
(Pipeline Records)

'Last Of A Dying Breed' the latest release from Atlanta's based rockers the Biters could easily be used as the soundtrack to 'That 70's Show'. The band's sheer adoration for Cheap Trick's melodic pop approach, Marc Bolan's glam rock styling and elements as varied as the golden era of David Bowie, Alice Cooper, Slade and Thin Lizzy work on every possible level. The Biters are, Tuk vocals and guitar, Matt Gabs on guitar and backing vocals, Travis on bass and backing vocals, and Joey on drums. Is 'Last Of A Dying Breed' the most original album in the world? Obviously not. But I can guarantee you this though. Once you press play and start blasting "Hallucination Generation", "So Many Nights", "Hell is for Babies" and "Evil Eye" you are going to be grinning ear to ear and singing along by the second verse. All four songs are winners! I kid you not. 'Last Of A Dying Breed' is a 100%, no auto tune rock and roll album that packs one hell of a punch! Whether you're a fan of the classic artists that inspired the band's sound or just looking for some honest fun in your rock n' roll (something sadly lacking in most of today's mainstream rock acts), 'Last Of A Dying Breed' by the Biters is an absolute must! Turn it on, turn it up, and let the rock and roll party begin! - Highly Recommended

37 CHANNELS by Tantric
(Pavement Entertainment)

There aren't many current, mainstream rock groups that retain the same post-grunge characteristics as efforts from the late '90s and early 2000s, but Tantric attempts to keep the genre alive with their fifth release, '37 Channels'. The album is produced by the band's frontman, Hugo Ferreira. I have say I am very impressed with what Hugo has done here.  As to the music, let's talk for a second about post-grunge. Generally what you get are some dirty guitars and some scratchy or throaty vocals and call it good. It's the trap that a thousand Pearl Jam and Sound Garden clones have fallen into.Tantric avoids this by providing a lot of variety, while still maintaining a cohesive theme for the whole album. On the whole, '37 Channels' is loaded with great songs. Personal faves are "Again", "Mosquita" featuring Shooter Jennings, "Gravity", "My Turn" featuring Leif Garret and  "Rise." Hugo Ferreira' s vocals are on point and sound better than ever. The band sound tight as well. Serving up some acoustic guitars , some dirty electric guitars spread liberally throughout the album which, thankfully, act as a garnish and not a novelty item. All thirteen songs are strong not a weak track among them.  As with their previous releases, Tantric manages to blend and mold several influences and they do it well on '37 Channels'. There is even a bit of country influence here. Combined with stellar song writing and a vocal delivery that enables the listener to really understand what is being said. The Louisville Kentucky natives have put out a recording that quite simply put, is amazing. Tantric is a band that let you know that they know what's up, and they're not afraid to tell you either! - Highly Recommended
